Mislabeled archaeological sites
Sites or immoveable objects therein that were named after a function or use that was proved to be wrong afterwards (and that name still persists).

Machu Picchu | Temple of the Moon - "Most scientists and authors believe that the name of the Temple is arbitrary, as many other names given to sites in Machu Picchu. Ruth M Wright and Alfredo Valencia Zegarra, authors of “ The Machu Picchu Guidebook. A self guided tour” say that they find no indication that the lunar ritual played any part in the use of this shrine."(wiki)
Petra | The Monastery - named so by European explorers because of its setting (but is a temple dedicated to Nabataean king Obodas I), The Treasury - (a mausoleum)
Uxmal | The Nunnery (a nickname given to it by the Spanish; it was a government palace - wiki) |
Suggestions?
Do you know of another WHS we could connect to Mislabeled archaeological sites?
A connection should:
- Not be "self evident"
- Link at least 3 different sites
- Not duplicate or merely subdivide the "Category" assignment already identified on this site.
- Add some knowledge or insight (whether significant or trivial!) about WHS for the users of this site
- Be explained, with reference to a source
